Tyre storage: How to store agricultural tyres correctly

As a farmer, you probably have several tyre mountings for the same tractor. Some even have 3 sets of equipment for the same tractor (ploughing, treatment, sowing). Whenever you need to dismount one set to replace it with another for a specific job, you need to store it. Here are our recommendations for tyre storage.

SUMMARY:

How to handle agricultural tyres

Before talking about tyre storage itself, it's important to address the subject of handling. Handling tyres means moving considerable weights - up to 350 kilos with rims - which is not without risk if the necessary precautions are not taken.

To ensure safe handling of dismounted wheels, the use of suitable equipment such as a wheel carrier is strongly recommended. We also recommend to wear protective gloves when handling tyres.

The right precautions for agricultural tyre storage

Before storing the tyres, it is advisable to clean them with a jet of water. It is important to clean them of any natural elements that could degrade the rubber over time.

Now let's get to the heart of the matter: proper tyre storage.

Agricultural tyres must be stored in clean conditions in dry, well-ventilated premises, away from direct sunlight. This prevents premature degradation of the rubber.

Proper tyre storage also requires keeping tyres away from:

  • sources of ozone (electric motors, transformers, arc welding stations, etc.),
  • any chemical substance, solvent or hydrocarbon likely to alter the nature of the rubber,

  • any objects that could pierce the rubber (sharp or pointed metal objects, etc.), flames or hot objects.

Before storing tyres, it is best to clean them with a jet of water.

Other important advice

  • Never store bare tyres or fully assembled off-vehicle wheels in direct contact with the ground for long periods. Place them on a wooden board or plastic sheeting, for example, to avoid differences in humidity.
  • When the tyres are on rims, you can store them either in stacks or vertically, but in the latter case, be sure to apply pressure to the tyres to prevent them from being crushed, which would eventually deform them.

Winter tyre storage

While winter storage involves the same precautions as tyre storage (keep tyres out of direct sunlight, in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from all chemical substances, sources of heat and sharp objects), there are other recommendations linked to the fact that the tyres remain fitted

To avoid tyres from being crushed, we recommend:

  • removing as much weight as possible from the machine, starting with removable tools,

  • putting +0.5 bar more pressure in the tyres than the recommended pressure.

In addition, to minimise the phenomenon of 'flat spotting' (when the tyre flattens slightly on the part in contact with the ground after wintering), the trick is to move the machine once a month so that the wheels turn a quarter turn.

How to put tyres back into service

When the tyre storage period is over, it is essential to restore the correct pressure to your tyres so that they support the performance you need.

Always refer to the MICHELIN inflation chart to determine the correct pressure for your agricultural tyres. You can also read our article "What is the correct tractor tyre pressure?"

It is essential that you inflate your tyres at the recommended pressure

inflate farm tyres

Don't forget that:

  • Under-inflation causes the casing to become exaggeratedly misshapen and will shorten the tyre's service life.

  • Over-inflation reduces the surface area in contact with the ground, causes a loss of grip, and makes the tyre more sensitive to impacts and cuts.

If loads are lower than those shown in our pressure/load charts, never inflate to lower than the minimum pressure shown in the tyre datasheets.

End of wintering

When harvest time arrives, it's time to put your combine harvester back into service after several months out of action. To find out how to prepare your tyres properly, read our article "How to adapt your combine harvester tyres".
